About

The Joseph Sibilly Elementary School, formerly the Robert Herrick School, is located in the St. Thomas/St. John School District of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is located near the Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Estate Mafolie. This one-story, one-room house served not only as an educational facility but also as a community center for dances and other festivities. It also serves as the official hurricane shelter for the North Side as well as a voting precinct.

This institution was named after the governor’s secretary, Robert Herrick, and was built on land donated by Mr. Joseph Sibilly. Robert Herrick School opened its doors to approximately sixty-five children in 1938. The school accommodated the elementary school population of the North Side. In 1962, a second floor was added to the building. Four years later, in 1966, another permanent structure was built. Later in 1968, an additional floor was added to the original structure. The school also acquired the property on which the James Monroe Annex sits and houses one Prekindergarten class.

In 1973, the school was officially renamed Joseph Sibilly Elementary School at a ceremony held in the Mafolie Clubhouse. Many government dignitaries attended the function.

Sibilly School continues to grow in size and reputation and remains a center of learning for children. Mr. Sibilly would be proud to see that the school continues to be an integral part of the community.
